English quartet target Alonso

Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso has reportedly been offered a return to the Premier League, with his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu entering its final six months.

Manchester United and Manchester City have been mooted as interested parties and while it is considered unlikely the former Liverpool man would move to Old Trafford, a switch to City and Manuel Pellegrini is thought possible, says the Daily Star.

The 32-year-old’s wages of £140,000 per week would not prove a problem for the Etihad Stadium side and Pellegrini is said to want Alonso on a free transfer, but a January departure would see Madrid demand a fee.

The Daily Star also claims Alonso’s former Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho, now at Chelsea, is also mulling over an approach for the playmaker, while Liverpool are said to be considering offering Alonso a route back to Anfield.
