23-year-old defender admits his future will be determined by Barcelona this summer

At the end of last summer’s transfer window, Barcelona needed salary space to ensure the loan signings of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix. In order to finalise these deals, Eric Garcia was moved on to Girona for the season, where he has been in excellent form.

Garcia will face his parent club on Saturday, when Barcelona come to Montilivi for a massive fixture in the race for 2nd place in La Liga. A “fear clause” was not included in the loan agreement between the two clubs, which means that Michel Sanchez can rely on the 23-year-old.

Garcia’s situation at Barcelona will be one to watch during the summer. He will head back at the end of the season, but it’s far from certain that he will be part of Xavi Hernandez’s squad going forward – he himself admitted to Sport that he is unsure where he will be for the 2024-25 campaign.

“I have a contract (at Barcelona), so I’ll go back at the end of the season and we’ll talk to the club to see what’s next. Things will depend on the club. I know I have two more years on my contract and that I have to go back. We haven’t talked yet, so we’ll see.”

Garcia could be one of those sold to raise funds for Xavi and Deco to spend during the summer. Centre-back is an area that Barcelona are stocked up in, with the likes of Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and Mikayil Faye already there.
